ELY SWIMMERS BREAK YET MORE RECORDS
Five more records have been broken by swimmers from Ely Swimming Club - one of which has stood un-challenged for nearly twenty years.
Eight year old Harry Love broke the record for 25 metres freestyle during the Club's Winter Championship competition, held at the Paradise Pool. Harry swam one length in 18.33 seconds, beating the previous record by a third of a second. Harry also broke two other records - the 50m freestyle (39.5) and 50m breaststroke (1.00.57) - both of which had never before been attempted by an eight year old at the Club.
Keeping it in the family, Harry's older brother Ben (aged 9) also broke a Club record for 100 metres breaststroke in his age group. His time was 1.49.68, almost a second faster than the previous time set by Samuel Dunkley (who is still a club member) in 2004. Another eight year old, Alan Gregory, set a new record for 50m backstroke of 57.5 - and is the youngest swimmer to record a time in that event.
hairman Paul Hill commented: "We are delighted that our younger swimmers are enjoying so much success. We have worked closely with the Swim School teachers at the Paradise Pool who have helped to identify swimmers with great potential, and this is already paying off. We anticipate exciting times ahead for the Club, as these swimmers develop and go on to represent Ely in major competitions."
Many of the older swimmers also achieved excellent results in the Championship event, which saw no less than 128 personal records broken, along with 20 ASA Bronze speed awards made, 18 Silver, nine Gold and ten Platinum.
Eight swimmers set lifetime best times in every one of their events: Katie Falconer, Claudia Mason, Alex Noble, Ben Love, Harry Love, Jack O'Connor, Louis Green and Shane Sanigar.
Ely Swimming Club trains at the Paradise Pool on Mondays (7.30pm to 9.00pm), Wednesdays (7.00pm to 9.00pm), Thursdays (7.00pm to 8.00pm) and Sunday mornings (8.00am to 10.00am). New members of all ages are always welcome - just go along to any session for a trial.
