Ely Swimming Club Hosts International Gala
The City of Ely Amateur Swimming Club played host to a team of 50 swimmers and their families from Kempen, Germany this weekend. In a friendly but competitive gala held on Saturday night, swimmers of all ages (from 7 to 52!) competed for medals. Ely won 22 gold, 12 silver and 5 bronze medals. Points were awarded on a weighted basis to allow for Kempen having fewer swimmers, and Ely won the overall competition by 38 points to 31.The final event in the competition was a 16 x 25m freestyle relay race with the teams drawn from both Ely and Kempen Swimming Clubs. The winning team was Joseph Watson, Billy Jackson, Ellie Howard, India Baynes, Lois Yardy, Tyler Allan, Claudia Mason, Samuel Dunkley, Camilla Lontay, Florian Lehmann, Jessica Yardy, Stuart Mitchell, Yvonne Remmert, Jürgen Rathmakers, Rebecca Parr and Henry Smith.
The event is a regular exchange, one year in Ely and the next year in Germany, and swimmers stay with local families for the weekend. This weekend began with a welcome breakfast, kindly hosted by Starbucks in Ely. The visitors then spent the day at The Raptor Foundation near St Ives (by special arrangement) before the Kempen team were placed with their host families.
Some of Ely's swimmers also took part in an Open Competition this weekend at Dereham. Most achieved personal best times in at least one event, and many came away with medals, plaques or ASA badges. One swimmer, Jessica Hill (14) won medals in all three of her races: gold for the 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle, and bronze in the 200m individual medley.
